Locks and Lots to Do: Scenic Recreational and Historic

A trip through the Mohawk Valley is nostalgic, with its natural beauty and its small
town charms. See our country’s oldest commercial waterway when you visit the
famous and historic Erie Canal! It’s a major attraction throughout the Mohawk
Valley region, offering many a place to picnic, bike along the canal or fish at one
of several locks. Erie Canal Cruises offers seasonal boat tours through Gems
Along the Mohawk in Herkimer near the New York State Thruway exit.

Don’t be fooled by the innocence of the rolling hills and country sides! There are
“diamonds” in those hills – literally! Herkimer Diamonds! That’s right; no trip to
Herkimer, New York, would be complete without a trip the Herkimer Diamond
Mines, on New York State Route 28, 9 miles from Herkimer. Camp at the KOA,
prospect for diamonds and enjoy a full day of family fun.

Remington Arms, founded in 1816, it is the oldest company in the US still making
its original product and the oldest continuously operating manufacturer. It is
located in Ilion, New York, just 4 miles from the Herkimer Motel and Suites.
Summer factory tours are at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm M-F from the end of May to the
end of August. Please visit their website for more information at www.remington.com

Feel like hiking? Herkimer County Community College has a great 1 mile hiking
trail with yellow trail markers. The trailhead starts behind the soccer field and
past the tennis courts. There are additional trails at the college for cross country
skiing as well. Parking is available nearby.

The city of Little Falls offers the antique lover a variety of interesting places to
shop. The Little Falls Antique Center and The Shops at 25 West has over 100
shops within a shop in an old vintage paper mill overlooking the Mohawk River
and the Erie Canal. History buffs will enjoy a stop at Revolutionary War hero
General Herkimer’s Home, http://nysparks.com/historic-sites, located on State
Route 169 (just off of the New York State Little Falls Thruway exit) in Little Falls.
